We’re looking for a Cyclic Operator to join our Maintenance team delivering good work for the Mackenzie District Council Road Maintenance Contract. The contract involves roading maintenance, renewals and operational work for 750kms of local roads within the district, and we require an experienced a motivated cyclic operator to help deliver work for the Mackenzie District Council, safely, on time and to the highest quality standard. In this role, you will be the lead cyclic operator for the contract.

As a Cyclic Operator, you’ll be part of a hands-on crew delivering essential road maintenance work across the Mackenzie network. This is an outdoor role where no two days look exactly the same, and your work will help keep roads safe, reliable, and ready for the communities that use them every day. You’ll be trusted to get stuck in, work well with the team, and bring a safety-first mindset to everything you do. If you enjoy practical work, take pride in doing the job properly, and are comfortable working in a changing environment, this might be the role for you.
The Contract area includes Tekapo, Fairlie and Twizel townships, high country lake fronts, with some great skiing, boating, hunting and fishing, all throughout the World’s largest international dark sky reserve. If you love the outdoors – this is the place to be!
Ngā kawenga matua | Key responsibilities
- Complete road inspections and required maintenance activities (e.g. snow clearing)
- Promptly respond to emergency events/callouts and provide an overall great service to the Mackenzie community.
- Act as the face of the contract, ensuring a professional approach in public relations.
- Maintain a high attention to detail to produce accurate records and reporting.
- Perform any other general maintenance tasks as required.
- Work closely with the wider crew to deliver Good Work for our customers and communities.

- Previous experience in Road maintenance, ideally cyclic operations
- Class 2 drivers’ licence and WTR endorsements (training can be provided for those without!)
- The ability to work unsupervised as well as in a face paced team environment.
- A proactive approach to health and safety – it’s our #1 priority!
- A strong sense of community ownership, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- A focus on quality and caring for the environment.
- A willingness to learn and advance current skills to meet contract objectives.
- Working knowledge of the AWM Mobile software is advantageous, but not essential.
