Tā mātou arawātea | Our Opportunity

We’re looking for a Graduate Geologist to join our geothermal team in Rotorua. This is a great opportunity to build your geoscience career while contributing to the safe, sustainable and effective management of Mercury’s geothermal resources. You’ll work alongside experienced geoscientists, engineers, environmental specialists, operations teams, contractors and external partners. You’ll gain hands-on experience across geothermal monitoring, compliance reporting, field performance, resource management and project support.

As a Graduate Geologist, you’ll provide technical support across Mercury’s geothermal portfolio, with a focus on geoscience, resource monitoring and operational performance. You’ll help plan, deliver and report on geoscientific surveys, support consent and compliance requirements, and contribute to multidisciplinary assessments of geothermal field performance. You’ll also develop your understanding of geothermal operations, well targeting, drilling, monitoring programmes and sustainable resource management.

This role will suit someone who enjoys technical work, field-based learning, collaboration and turning data into clear, useful insights.

  • Support geothermal resource management and consent compliance activities
  • Assist with planning, delivering and reporting on geoscientific field surveys
  • Integrate geoscience information into multidisciplinary assessments of field performance
  • Support monitoring of geothermal reservoir and well performance
  • Contribute to annual and regulatory reporting for regional councils, joint venture partners and other stakeholders
  • Help manage contractors involved in geoscience, compliance and resource monitoring activities
  • Support projects that improve, optimise or grow Mercury’s geothermal portfolio
  • Participate in training, site visits, technical studies and research activities
  • Contribute to safe work practices, environmental performance and risk management

Tāu ka kawe mai | What you'll bring:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Earth Sciences, such as geology, geochemistry, chemistry, or an equivalent field
  • A full New Zealand driver licence
  • A genuine interest in the geothermal industry and long-term career development
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Confidence working in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Good attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality technical work
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office and other relevant software
  • Flexibility to travel across geothermal fields, sometimes at short notice
  • A postgraduate or master’s degree in geology or geochemistry would be an advantage, but it is not essential.
