Who we are/Ko wai mātou

Mātai Airana, Mātai Kotirana / The Centre for Irish and Scottish Studies was founded in 2009 as a result of donations from the Eamon Cleary Trust and the Stuart Residence Halls Council, whose respective generosity founded the Eamon Cleary Chair in Irish Studies and the Stuart Chair in Scottish Studies. The Chairs have made substantial contributions to academic and community engagements with the literature, history and culture of Ireland and Scotland, as well as their global diasporas. The Centre’s events, including conferences, festivals, symposia, and workshops, have featured visits from high profile politicians, major authors and international academics.

The role/Te mahi

With the generous support of the Eamon Cleary Trust, the Mātai Airana, Mātai Kotirana / Centre for Irish and Scottish Studies invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship. The Eamon Cleary Postdoctoral Fellowship in Irish Studies is open to Ph.D. graduates in any area of Irish studies (Irish literature, history, politics, sociology, diaspora etc), but scholars with a medical humanities dimension to their research are particularly encouraged to apply. There is no required teaching associated with the role but it is expected that the postdoctoral fellow will actively participate in the life of the Centre, including public engagement and research dissemination, and contribute to the running of the Centre’s events and conferences.

Skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

The successful candidate will have:

• A PhD or equivalent doctorate in Irish studies or a related field.
• An excellent record of research related to Irish studies (Irish literature, history, politics, sociology, diaspora etc) and appropriate to career stage.
• A track record in the medical humanities is desirable but not essential.
• An excellent ability to work without direct supervision, set priorities and deliver to timeframes.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain an independent research project.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
• Ability to work well in a team environment.
• A commitment to practice in a manner consistent with the principles of Te Tiriti O Waitangi.

This is a Ōtepoti, Dunedin based, full-time (1.0 FTE), fixed term position for two years available to start in February 2027.

The salary for this position is $92,350 per annum.
