Mo te turanga | About the role

Based in Greymouth and working across the Paparoa Track and Pike Valley, you'll play a key role supporting the delivery of high-quality heritage and visitor infrastructure.

In this role, you will:

  • Maintain and improve the Paparoa Track Great Walk and Pike29 Memorial Track
  • Ensure huts, bridges, and structures are safe, functional, and visitor-ready
  • Carry out track maintenance and support construction/building work
  • Maintain both backcountry and front-country visitor sites
  • Support seasonal hut wardens and logistics
  • Work collaboratively with biodiversity, community, and wider Heritage & Visitor teams

You will work in remote and often challenging environments, contributing to the upkeep of some of New Zealand's most spectacular landscapes.

If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

  • Strong leadership skills and a calm demeanour
  • Excellent communication skills and a positive, can-do attitude
  • Strong field work planning skills
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • A full or restricted Class 1 Driver Licence
  • Experience working on dual use tracks with swales and shaped drainage systems
  • A good level of physical fitness

Desirable:

  • Tree felling qualification or are working towards this
  • A Class 6 motorcycle licence
  • Experience riding motorcycles off road and in rough terrain
  • Experience working in and around helicopters

Mo te tima | About the team

The Mawhera/Greymouth Heritage and Visitor Team consist of 11 full time staff, 4 of those being based in the Reefton field Centre, plus up to 3 fixed term staff during the summer season.

The Paparoa H&V Team consists of 3 full time staff and 3 Hut wardens seasonally. The 2 teams work together on a variety of different work tasks.

The salary range for this position is $65,590 to $76,589 with the starting salary of the successful applicant based on their relevant skills and experience.
