Salary band & range: General Salary Range D: $100,934 to $135,076 depending on skills and experience

(Salary midpoint is $118,005)

About The Role – Kōrero Mō Te Tūranga

We are looking for a highly analytical and curious Senior Analyst to join our Inventory & Benchmarking team within the Strategy, Insights & Evidence directorate of Policy & Trade.

This role is central to providing data-driven insights that inform policy decisions across the primary sector. You will work with complex datasets to generate benchmarking insights, understand farm performance, and support evidence-based policy development and evaluation.

As a Senior Analyst, you will:

  • Deliver high-quality analytical outputs (e.g. benchmarking indicators, sector analysis, quartile analysis)
  • Develop models and insights using data from multiple primary sector sources
  • Identify trends and emerging issues impacting the primary industries
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including industry, government, and Māori partners
  • Contribute to cross-MPI work programmes and policy initiatives
  • Support Ministers through timely briefings, advice, and responses
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to analysts within the team.

About You – Mōu

You are an experienced analyst who thrives on turning data into insight and insight into impact. You enjoy working in a collaborative environment and are comfortable engaging with diverse stakeholders.

We're especially interested in candidates who have:

  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative analysis at a senior level
  • Strong ability to communicate complex analytical findings to non-technical audiences
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with large and complex datasets, ideally including farm-level or primary sector data
  • A relevant tertiary qualification
  • Advanced Excel and data analysis capability
  • A proactive, curious mindset with the ability to bring new tools and perspectives to analytical challenges.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of primary industries, particularly pastoral sectors
  • Familiarity with emerging analytical tools and techniques

About The Team – Mō Tō Mātou Rōpū

You'll report to the Manager, Inventory & Benchmarking, working within a small, supportive, high performing team.

Our team maintains and utilises farm-level data and modelling to understand farm performance. We collaborate across MPI and with external stakeholders to deliver high quality evidence and insights that inform decision-making at every levels.
