Dunedin City Council

The Dunedin City Council (DCC) takes great pride in delivering a broad range of services to the communities of this unique and vibrant city. From roads to recycling, public libraries and pools, water supply to walking tracks—and everything in between—DCC’s people are talented and committed to serving their community.

Are you a confident leader who enjoys working with people, with experience in teaching or coaching and a background in swimming, aquatic environments, or water-based recreation and safety?

We are looking for a Just Swim Teacher Supervisor to lead our teaching team, ensure high-quality programme delivery, and confidently manage the day-to-day challenges of a busy swim school environment. You will play a key role in maintaining safe, consistent, and engaging swim programmes for our community.

About the Role

As a Just Swim Teacher Supervisor, you will play a key role in the day-to-day operation of our swim school. You will provide leadership to Head Teachers and Swim Teachers, ensuring lessons run smoothly, staff are supported, and customers have a positive experience.

This is a hands-on leadership role where you will be actively involved in coordinating programmes, mentoring staff, and maintaining high teaching standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, support, and develop swim teaching staff
  • Oversee daily swim school operations and programme delivery
  • Ensure lessons are delivered to a high, consistent standard
  • Support swimmer progression across all programme levels
  • Manage rostering and staffing to meet operational needs
  • Respond to customer feedback and ensure a positive experience
  • Maintain strong health and safety practices

Ideally you will have

  • 4–5 years’ experience in swim teaching or coaching
  • Experience leading or supervising staff
  • Strong knowledge of swim school programme delivery
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and develop others
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • A commitment to customer service and team culture
  • Relevant qualifications – New Zealand Certificate in Aquatics (Swim and Water Safety Teacher) or similar (desirable)

What we offer

At Dunedin City Council, we are passionate about creating a city where everyone can thrive. You will be part of a supportive team that values collaboration, wellbeing, and continuous improvement.

This is a great opportunity to step into a leadership role where you can make a real impact—developing staff, improving programmes, and helping our community build essential water safety and swimming skills.

  • A supportive and collaborative team environment
  • Opportunities for professional development
  • The chance to lead and influence programme delivery
  • 5 weeks’ annual leave
  • Parental leave benefits, including paid partner’s leave
  • Free annual flu vaccinations and eye checks every two years
