About the Role - Korero mo te Turanga

We are seeking an Analyst to join our Strategy, Insights and Evidence directorate, which sits within Policy and Trade. The Policy and Trade business unit provides sector-level strategic thinking and evidence-based advice for effective government decision-making for systems related to agriculture, forestry, fisheries, biosecurity, food, animal welfare, and rural communities.

In this role, you will partner with key industry stakeholders to address the economic challenges facing our primary sectors as they transition to a productive, sustainable, low-emissions future. You'll also play a key part in improving MPI's economic capability and understanding of the opportunities and barriers facing our primary sectors.

You will play a role in the use of pastoral sector knowledge, economic thinking, and an understanding of global supply chain and corporate trade relationships to inform and influence policy decisions and answer the important macroeconomic questions facing our primary industries. You'll ask great questions, learn quickly, collaborate well, and effectively communicate analytical results.

As an Analyst, you will:

  • Lead a sector in MPI's Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries (SOPI) publication and grow into a subject matter expert for that sector.
  • Partner with more senior analysts to deliver economic research pieces to increase government's understanding of how our food and fibre sectors work, the context in which they operate, and what their opportunities for growth are.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key individuals across the spectrum of stakeholders, Maori, government, and non-government agencies.
  • Use data and analysis to improve policy advice and provide stakeholders with the information they need to be successful in their roles.

About You - Mou

To be successful in this role, you'll have a passion for learning and the confidence to ask questions, with relevant experience in the food and fibre sector, economics, finance, international relations, or related areas. You'll be curious, able to draw insights from both qualitative and quantitative information and have the skills to distil information into narrative-rich analysis and advice.

Your collaboration and communication skills will help you build relationships across the directorate and positively contribute to team culture. You'll be helpful, open to feedback, and comfortable challenging conventional norms.

You will be able to demonstrate:

  • A tertiary qualification in economics, finance, or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of macroeconomics and how economic principles apply in the New Zealand primary sector context.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: the ability to effectively engage with a wide range of persons with interest and involvement in the primary sector.
  • Proven ability to communicate in a manner that is easily understood by a range of audiences.
  • Flair for turning data and information into rich and engaging narratives

You do not need to meet all of the role requirements to apply. We offer a breadth of development and learning opportunities and will welcome an application if you think you could make a great fit.
