  • Influence market performance, system evolution and participant confidence

Transpower’s purpose is to empower the energy future for New Zealand — a future that delivers a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable, secure electricity system.

At the forefront of the energy sector, Transpower owns and operates the national electricity transmission system and fulfils the System Operator role. With over $5 billion in critical infrastructure, we connect generators to homes, businesses and communities across Aotearoa.

Role context

This role sits at the core of Transpower’s System Operator function — leading the team responsible for market operations expertise, industry engagement, and the delivery of high-quality market information and insights.

You’ll operate at the intersection of real-time system operations, market performance and future market evolution — ensuring Transpower delivers a trusted, impartial and high-performing system operator service.

You’ll translate complex system and market dynamics into clear, actionable advice for senior leaders, regulators and industry participants — supporting effective decision making in both real-time and future market settings.

About the team

The Market Operations Manager sits within the Market Services Group, part of the Operations division, and reports to the Head of Market Services.

The team plays a critical role in:

  • Supporting real-time market and system operations
  • Providing market analytics, insights and industry communications
  • Enabling new generation to commission and participate in markets
  • Supporting ancillary services and market system capability
  • Engaging with participants and stakeholders to strengthen market understanding and performance

You will lead a team of specialist market analysts and work closely with teams across Operations, including system operations, forecasting, planning, technology and regulatory functions.

The opportunity

As Market Operations Manager, you will lead and build a small team to deliver high-quality, impartial market operations analytics, and insights that underpin New Zealand’s electricity market.

You’ll provide trusted advice across Transpower and the wider industry, shaping how the market responds to system conditions today while contributing to how it evolves in the future.

Key areas you will lead include:

  • Providing electricity market and system operations expertise to support real-time decision making and future system evolution
  • Leading market system modelling capability, ensuring tools reflect system realities and support new asset integration
  • Delivering electricity market analytics, insights and industry communications that inform participants and stakeholders
  • Leading engagement with regulators, participants and service providers to support effective market participation
  • Supporting ancillary services functions including procurement, compliance and performance
  • Identifying and managing market and system operations risks, issues and opportunities
  • Contributing to market design, policy development and Code change processes
  • Building capability and performance across a high-impact specialist team

What will you bring?

You’ll bring substantial experience in electricity markets, power systems or another complex, high-consequence environment, supported by demonstrated leadership of specialist teams.

You’ll be comfortable operating at senior levels — translating complexity into insight, building trust across stakeholders, and guiding decisions that balance operational performance, market integrity and future system needs.

Skills and experience we’ll assess (please provide examples):

  • Demonstrated experience leading specialist or technical teams delivering complex outcomes
  • Understanding of electricity markets, power systems or comparable environments
  • Experience providing advice to senior leaders, regulators or industry stakeholders
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights
  • Strong analytical capability and commercial judgement
  • Experience identifying and solving complex problems across short and long-term horizons
  • Track record building effective relationships across organisations and with external stakeholders
