At the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) | Te Pā Whakamarumaru, we are dedicated to our mission of keeping Aotearoa New Zealand and our people safe and secure. We collect and analyse intelligence and security concerns to protect New Zealand from threats such as foreign interference, espionage and terrorism.
We are looking for an experienced software engineering professional who is curious, creative, and brings the initiative and drive to deliver significant value from their efforts. You will be provided with plenty of opportunity to work with a variety of interesting technologies and datasets – some of which you will not find elsewhere.
The role
You will work directly with intelligence professionals to fully understand their needs and how they conduct investigations in order to build new features and/or applications that will shape the direction of future capabilities. Among this, you will also write structured, tested, readable and maintainable code, identifying evolving business requirements and plan future technical capabilities.
You will work within a team of creative software engineers who work on core internal applications.
Part of the role responsibilities will focus on application development & enhancements, ensuring the core application & applicable systems are future-proofed and resilient. Whilst also taking ownership of the end-to-end development lifecycle. This will involve working closely with Business Analysts & stakeholders to understand their needs and create excellent solutions
This role will give you autonomy to find out-of-the-box solutions, and as such you will need to be curious and always on the lookout for a better way of creating brilliant outcomes
What we are looking for
Experience designing and writing software with Java , Python , C# , or Javascript/ReactJS
Strong Java skills and have at least dabbled with the other languages
Excellent knowledge of technology fundamentals
A positive attitude toward innovation and emerging technologies.
Additional experience working with and within CI/CD , and Kubernetes would be beneficial. Data is at the heart of everything we do, so familiarity with data storage technologies , security , and information management practices would be put to good use.
Your excellent interpersonal skills will enable you to develop positive and productive relationships with a range of people, technical or otherwise. You will be pragmatic, understanding of different perspectives and mindful of balancing doing things right with getting things done.

Working within our unique environment means we have to ensure you're eligible for employment.
You must
Have been a New Zealand Citizen for at least 10 years
OR
Hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa and ideally have been a citizen of the UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years
Be eligible to obtain a Top Secret Special (TSS) security clearance
Ordinarily, this means you'll have a 15 year checkable background in countries NZSIS Vetting can make meaningful and reliable checks.
