Te Tūranga i The Role
As Lead – Data Platform Engineering, you will provide both technical and people leadership for our platform operations capability. You will own the design, build, and ongoing evolution of our Snowflake data platform, ensuring it delivers high-performance, scalable, and secure enterprise data infrastructure aligned to Sky’s strategic objectives.
Reporting to the Head of Data and Business Intelligence, this is a hands-on leadership role responsible for defining and driving best practice across platform operations, administration, and engineering standards. You will lead the development, integration, ingestion, optimisation, and maintenance of data warehouse solutions that are reliable, governed, and compliant by design.
As part of the wider Data and Business Intelligence team, you will play a critical role in delivering the data and BI roadmap—driving continuous improvement, solving complex problems, and ensuring robust platform performance through disciplined testing, deployment, documentation, and review practices.
We’re looking for someone who combines strong technical depth with curiosity and pace—comfortable operating in a fast-moving environment and motivated by turning data into actionable insight that creates meaningful value for Sky’s customers, people, and shareholders.
NGĀ HAEPAPA | ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own the design, build, and ongoing operation of scalable, high-performance data platforms supporting batch and real-time processing
- Lead the development and optimisation of ETL/ELT pipelines to ensure reliable, accurate, and timely data availability
- Define and enforce best practices for data governance, security, and compliance across the platform
- Establish and drive engineering standards, including CI/CD, testing, deployment, and documentation practices
- Lead the technical design and delivery of data platform initiatives, ensuring alignment with business objectives and architecture principles
- Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to data engineers, fostering a high-performing engineering culture
- Ensure platform reliability, performance, and cost efficiency through proactive monitoring, optimisation, and incident management
- Partner with Data and BI stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver fit-for-purpose, scalable solutions

About
The role combines deep technical expertise with leadership, architecture vision, and business alignment. The role goes well beyond building pipelines—it’s about owning the end-to-end data ecosystem and enabling teams to use data reliably, securely, and at scale. You will also have the following:
- 10+ years’ experience working with data platforms, data engineering, and analytics in enterprise environments
- Proven experience designing and delivering cloud-native data platforms (Snowflake, AWS) at scale
- Deep expertise in platform operations, including performance optimisation, cost management, monitoring, and reliability
- Proven ability to define and implement engineering standards, patterns, and best practices across data platforms
- Hands-on experience with modern data tooling (e.g. Snowflake, dbt, AWS, NiFi/OpenFlow or similar ingestion frameworks)
- Advanced proficiency in SQL and Python for data engineering and platform development
- Strong understanding of data architecture, data modelling, and modern ELT/ETL approaches
- Experience designing, building, and governing secure, scalable, and compliant data warehouse solutions
- Experience implementing CI/CD, testing, and deployment practices for data platforms
- Commercially minded, with a focus on delivering business value through data
