Our vision: Nature is thriving in Aotearoa | Te Oranga o te Ao Tūroa
This is a rare opportunity to take on a highly autonomous Ranger Project Lead role based in the Chatham Islands, supporting conservation outcomes in one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most unique and challenging environments.
The role sits within the Masterton operations team but is physically located on the Chathams and works closely with remote senior leaders, local staff, contractors, mana whenua and the Chatham Islands community. You’ll provide practical leadership and project delivery across a wide range of work programmes, enabling specialist teams to focus on priority biodiversity mahi.
Mō te tūranga | About the role
As Ranger Project Lead – Heritage and Visitors, you’ll lead and deliver operational conservation projects in a remote island setting where pro-activeness, adaptability, sound judgement and a practical “can‑do” mindset are essential.
The work is diverse and hands‑on, covering infrastructure, assets and site management. You’ll be trusted to operate with a high level of independence while maintaining strong links with your remote leadership team.
The position will be focussed on:
- Leading and delivering ranger projects and work programmes to a high standard
- Maintaining tracks, huts and visitor assets, including on offshore islands
- Oversight of culturally significant sites on conservation land
- Contractor management and relationship management with key stakeholders
- Ensuring all work complies with DOC systems, policies and safety requirements
- Keeping our workshops, fleet and equipment safe, reliable and ready to go.
This role requires someone comfortable working at both the practical “on‑the‑tools” level and a higher planning and coordination level, delivering work that requires sound due diligence and professional judgement.
