We’re on the lookout for an experienced Maintenance Department Manager to lead our team on the Gisborne District Council Tūranga Maintenance contract. Gisborne is known for its welcoming culture, vibrant community spirit, golden beaches, and iconic sunrises – all set in a region rich in history and natural beauty.
In this role, you’ll lead the maintenance department delivering maintenance and renewals across the network, making sure every activity is delivered safely, on time, on budget, and to the standards our client and communities expect.
You’ll be the go-to leader for the maintenance contract, keeping day-to-day operations running smoothly while staying sharp on performance, safety, customer outcomes, and financial results. It’s a diverse, hands-on role where you can shape the future of the contract, build strong relationships, and drive smart improvements right across operations.
Ngā tino kawenga mahi | Key role responsibilities
- Lead and manage maintenance and renewals programmes from planning through to delivery and close out.
- Oversee programming, resourcing, budgeting, cost control and reporting for the Tūranga Maintenance contract.
- Ensure all works comply with contract requirements, relevant standards, specifications and health and safety obligations.
- Drive quality, innovation and continuous improvement in maintenance methodologies, systems and processes.
- Develop, coach and support a high-performing maintenance team and subcontractor base.
- Build strong relationships and collaborate with Gisborne District Council, internal stakeholders, consultants and contractors to achieve programme and customer outcomes.

- Significant experience in roading maintenance and renewals or civil infrastructure, ideally on long-term maintenance contracts.
- Strong technical understanding of network maintenance, asset management principles and contract delivery.
- Proven leadership and people management experience in a maintenance/roading or civil environment.
- Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, programmes and multiple concurrent work streams.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management and relationship-building skills.
- Sound understanding of health and safety legislation and best practice, with a genuine commitment to keeping people safe.
- Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Professional membership (for example, Engineering NZ / IPENZ, or similar) is an advantage.
- Full, clean NZ driver’s licence.
