About the role | Mō te tūranga:

Our Histology Department is seeking dedicated, enthusiastic, and competent Medical Laboratory Technicians to join our team at Wellington Hospital. These are multiple permanent, full-time positions, working on a rostered and rotating schedule, each comprising 80 hours per fortnight.

In these roles, you will have the opportunity to develop and strengthen a range of technical and professional skills within a supportive laboratory environment. You will be responsible for carrying out histology-related duties with accuracy and efficiency, while working confidently both independently and as part of a collaborative team. Strong organisation, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining high-quality standards are essential.

The positions require a friendly and professional approach, with a strong focus on delivering excellent service and supporting quality patient outcomes. This is a great opportunity for individuals who are keen to grow their expertise in a dynamic and fast-paced laboratory setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Receipts, process and stores specimens correctly, giving appropriate priority to urgent specimens.
  • Prioritise and organise work to meet established deadlines and turn-around times.
  • Perform tests in accordance with the protocols and methods established.
  • Understand the basic principles and techniques of the methods and protocols used within the Department.
  • Set up and operate the laboratory equipment in accordance with the Department’s methods and procedure manuals.
  • Carry out and records the required equipment checks, calibrations, maintenance and quality control as required, including recognising problems and informing the appropriate person.
  • Use the LIS proficiently including generation of work lists and entering data as appropriate.

To be successful in this role you need to have:

  • The ability to work in a methodical manner adhering to strict quality procedure guidelines.
  • A team focus with initiative, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and possess the ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
  • A proactive and adaptable approach to learning new processes and supporting continuous improvement within the laboratory.
  • Excellent attention to detail, with good record-keeping skills.
  • The ability to work independently, particularly during night-shift hours, while in a supported role.
  • Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand and a current Annual Practicing Certificate is essential.
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
