Senior Design Analyst

Stats NZ

Here, you don’t just learn tools — you deepen the analytical, methodological, and design thinking capabilities that will support your career both now and into the future. You’ll work on national-scale problems that help Aotearoa understand itself more clearly — people, places, businesses, and the economy — and see firsthand how great design and analysis can shape real-world decisions.

We’re currently looking for a number of experienced

Senior Analysts to join teams across our Insights and Statistics (I&S) in both permanent and fixed-term opportunities.

Mō te tūnga | About the role

These roles give you the opportunity to lead thinking, shape practice, and lift capability — not just deliver analysis. As a Senior Design Analyst, you will utilise your previous professional experience to work across the full analytical and design lifecycle — from understanding problems and shaping methods, building solutions, engaging key stakeholders, identifying and mitigating risks, through to embedding standards, and continuously improving how we work.

You’ll use your technical expertise (R, Python, SQL, or similar tools) to analyse complex qualitative and quantitative data, ensure its integrity, and translate findings into clear, credible insights for stakeholders and decision-makers.

While strong technical capabilities are essential, what really sets a Stats NZ Senior Analyst apart is their ability to bring context, curiosity, and conceptual thinking into their work.

  • You’re a systems thinker — able to see the big picture and how your work fits into it
  • You’re collaborative and generous with your expertise
  • You’re comfortable influencing without authority and contributing to direction-setting
  • You’re committed to continuous improvement — for yourself, your team, and the system

As a proactive high performer who moves with pace and purpose, we will look to you to lead and influence design decisions across both projects and teams, provide expert advice on methodologies, standards and frameworks and actively contribute to the ongoing evolution of our design practice, tools and standards. You’ll continue to develop your leadership skills by mentoring and coaching analysts who support your workstreams and engaging with colleagues – within Stats NZ and internationally – to ensure we are continually applying best practice and can maximise our collective impact.

Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu | What you will bring

  • Strong demonstrated professional experience (typically 4–6+ years) in analytics, research, or statistical design in complex or quickly evolving environments
  • Relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. economics, finance, accounting, statistics, data science)
  • Advanced skills in quantitative analytical techniques and comfort working with both structured and semi‑structured datasets to identify trends, issues, and relationships using tools such as R, Python, SQL or similar
  • A delivery‑driven mindset—simplifying processes, removing obstacles, and ensuring your work is accurate, repeatable and explained in a way that delivers real value.
  • Calmness, courage, and excellent judgement when navigating complex problems, ambiguity, risk, or sensitive situations.
  • The ability to build trust quickly, form strong partnerships, and role‑model the proactive behaviours we expect to see from our Seniors.

If you’re an experienced analyst who is interested in moving beyond delivery into shaping practice and influencing direction, while having the opportunity to tackle nationally relevant work, we’d love to hear from you.
