• Senior Software Engineer – SRE (Payments)

At ASB, our Payments platforms sit at the heart of how New Zealand moves money. We’re looking for an experienced C#/.NET Developer to join our Payments domain, operating within a highly secure, regulated banking environment.

This is a development‑ led role, with shared responsibility for the security, reliability and operability of the systems you build. You’ll work on large‑scale, mission‑critical banking systems where strong engineering, secure design and operational excellence genuinely matter.

About The Role

You’ll join a Payments‑aligned Agile Scrum squad responsible for building and running backend services that support high‑value, high‑throughput payment platforms.

The core focus of the role is hands‑ on software development, supported by a pragmatic

SRE / DevOps mindset. Alongside writing high‑quality code, you’ll help ensure systems are observable, resilient, well‑managed and production‑ready.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Design and develop critical backend services leveraging modern C# and .NET ecosystem.
• Architect and implement cloud-native solutions on Microsoft Azure, utilizing Azure Functions, Service Bus, Cosmos DB, and Key Vault
• Design and deliver scalable event-driven architectures with asynchronous messaging patterns, orchestration workflows, and RESTful HTTP APIs
• Maintain and enhance legacy systems and on-premises infrastructure
• Integrate security best practices throughout the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) following secure-by-default principles
• Implement proper identity and secret management and work within established cloud security and regulatory controls
• Contribute to observability, monitoring and production readiness
• Support incident response, root cause analysis and continuous improvement
• Work closely with engineers, product owners, platform, SRE and security teams
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and operational practices
• Participate in on‑call support rotations

About You

You’re a senior software engineer who enjoys owning what you build, from design through to production. You’re comfortable working in high‑ trust, regulated environments, where quality, security and resilience are non‑negotiable.

You bring a development‑first mindset, alongside a strong appreciation for reliability and operability.

You will bring

• Proven experience as a Senior Software Engineer / C# .NET Developer
• Strong experience with modern C# and .NET,AI
• Experience developing backend services on Azure
• Solid experience with event‑driven and asynchronous systems
• Unit testing experience
• Experience contributing to or supporting business‑critical, large‑scale systems
• Experience working in secure, regulated environments
• Hands-on experience with Copilot or other AI development tools
• A pragmatic SRE / DevOps mindset and appreciation for production ownership

Technical Experience We’re Looking For

• C# and modern .NET
• Azure Functions, Service Bus, Cosmos DB, Key Vault
• Event‑driven architectures and messaging patterns
• CI/CD tooling (Azure DevOps, GitHub or similar)
• SQL and relational databases
• Monitoring and observability tooling (e.g. Elastic or similar)

Nice to have

• Banking or financial services experience
• Experience mentoring or providing technical leadership
• Strong interest in reliability engineering and operational excellence
