Business Development Manager - Data Centers
Location: New Zealand
Sector: 50% Data Centers | 50% Power & Grid Infrastructure
The Opportunity
A specialist electrical and power engineering consultancy firm is entering the AI and high‑density data center market and is hiring a Business Development Manager in New Zealand to lead commercial origination across the nation.
This is a foundational role where is ideal for someone with deep relationships across data center developers, operators, hyperscalers, colocation providers, and known offtakers, who can also originate sites and secure early‑stage project opportunities.
You will sit at the front end of the market: opening doors, shaping projects before commitments are made, and converting early discussions into advisory and engineering engagements.
Responsibilities
Market Origination & Growth
- Build and grow a data center pipeline across priority markets
- Leverage existing relationships with data center offtakers (e.g. hyperscalers, colocation providers, large operators) to originate new opportunities
- Develop early‑stage engagement with developers, investors, and operators across AI and hyperscale data centers
- Identify new data center sites, assess power feasibility, and support site selection strategies
Offtake & Site Development Focus
- Maintain and expand relationships with existing and prospective data center offtakers
- Originate projects where power availability, grid access, and offtake certainty are critical
- Lead land identification, landowner engagement, and commercial negotiations
- Support site control discussions, heads of terms, and development agreements
Client Engagement & Commercial Conversion
- Act as the commercial interface for data center clients
- Translate client requirements into scoped advisory and engineering workstreams alongside technical teams
- Support proposals, fee structures, and contract negotiations
- Position power, grid connection, and network advisory capabilities as a differentiator
Internal Collaboration
- Work closely with senior engineers to shape data center‑specific services
- Provide market intelligence on customer demand, competitor activity, and pricing
- Contribute to strategic targeting of priority clients and regions
Requirements
- Proven experience in business development, commercial, or origination roles within data centers
- Established relationships with data center offtakers (hyperscalers, colocation providers, major operators)
- Demonstrated ability to originate projects, not just manage existing accounts
- Data center power requirements
- Grid connection and capacity constraints
- Utility and network operator engagement
- Experience identifying sites and negotiating with landowners
- Comfortable engaging senior stakeholders across technical, commercial, and executive levels
Personal Attributes
- Entrepreneurial, self‑driven, and comfortable in a build‑from‑scratch role
- Commercially astute with strong negotiation skills
- Relationship‑led and outcomes focused
- Able to work confidently alongside highly technical engineering teams
