Applied Physics Specialist (AI Training)

About The Role

What if your years of graduate-level physics training could directly shape how AI understands the physical world? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to probe, challenge, and expose the limits of cutting-edge Large Language Models — ensuring they reason correctly about everything from quantum mechanics to thermodynamics.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for researchers and academics who want high-impact work on their own schedule. No prior AI experience required — just deep domain expertise and a rigorous analytical mind.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Design advanced physics problems — craft PhD qualifying exam-level challenges requiring multi-step logical reasoning, mathematical derivation, and first-principles thinking across topics like quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and thermodynamics
  • Author rigorous ground-truth solutions — produce step-by-step "golden responses" with flawless handling of physical constants, units, and logical proof structure
  • Audit AI-generated physics — evaluate model outputs for physical consistency, identifying where AI "hallucinates" results that violate conservation laws, boundary conditions, or other fundamental principles
  • Provide structured feedback — deliver clear, detailed evaluations that help improve physics-informed reasoning in AI models, covering constraints like symmetry, conservation of energy, and momentum

Who You Are

  • PhD completed or in final stages in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
  • Deep mastery across the core pillars of physics: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
  • Exceptional ability to explain complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations in clear, structured English
  • Uncompromising attention to detail — units, scientific notation, dimensional analysis, and proof logic are second nature to you
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working independently and asynchronously
  • No prior AI or data annotation experience required

Nice to Have

  • Experience with data annotation, data quality workflows, or scientific dataset evaluation
  • Proficiency with computational tools such as Python (NumPy/SciPy), MATLAB, or COMSOL
  • Background in research benchmarking or academic assessment design

Why Join Us

  • Work on genuinely cutting-edge AI projects in collaboration with leading AI research labs
  • Fully remote and flexible — structure your hours around your existing commitments
  • Freelance autonomy with meaningful, intellectually stimulating work
  • Direct, tangible impact on how AI models understand and reason about the physical universe
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
