Bank of New Zealand

Remote

Ko mātou tēnei | This is Us

We're on a mission to become New Zealand's best digital bank, dedicated to supporting our customers and colleagues with innovative solutions. Join us to make a real difference in the digital banking landscape!

We have an exciting opportunity for FullStack Developers (Junior & Intermediate) to join BNZ’s Digital Channels domain, which builds and maintains the Web Customer Channel. Multiple tūranga are available across our tīma (teams) who work across web, platform, and sales and acquisitions.

This is a permanent, full-time opportunity based in Auckland. This is a hybrid role with three days in the office and two days where you can work flexibly.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

We sat down with the People Leaders, and they told us the following about the role:

What are 5 day to day tasks the person in this role will complete?

  • Deliver customer-facing improvements with growing ownership: help clarify the problem, break work into milestones, implement changes, and release safely.
  • Make pragmatic day-to-day engineering decisions: follow agreed patterns and standards, and balance delivery needs with maintainability, performance, scalability, and operational impact.
  • Solve problems with increasing independence: break down tasks, identify root causes, propose options, and ask good questions early when something is unclear.
  • Protect reliability and quality: write well-tested, observable code, participate in code reviews, and contribute to production support/on call by investigating issues and following through with fixes and preventative improvements.
  • Lift the team: collaborate across disciplines, communicate clearly, share knowledge through pairing/documentation, and seek and apply feedback to grow.

What is the tīma culture and environment like?

Join a vibrant tīma of highly skilled professionals united in their passion for innovation and collaboration. This tīma fosters creative, supportive atmospheres where teamwork and creativity thrive.

The tīma brings together experienced senior developers and testers alongside talented junior and intermediate engineers. You’ll have support around you to learn quickly through pairing, feedback, and great code reviews, while taking on increasing ownership as your confidence grows.

What projects / work will the candidate be working on now and into the next year?

The work you do will depend on the tīma you join, and you’ll focus on an area such as improving digital self-service, enhancing the loans customer experience, or strengthening the shared front-end platform other teams build on (including work in the AI space). Over the year, the focus is a mix of delivering new customer-facing features, improving and modernising existing experiences, and strengthening the reliability and overall quality of the services we run in production.

What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?

You will have the opportunity to work on projects that affects the life of millions of people in a positive way and be part of a modern department at the bank. We are doing work on current technology, including modernisation of our applications and Artificial Intelligence use.

What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity?

As we have millions of users in our applications, there’s a lot of things to consider; like performance, accessibility, reliability, to name a few. This is a great opportunity to upskill in the development of heavily used applications.

What technical skills and experience are required for this role?

  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining software (through commercial work, internships, or personal projects).
  • A good grasp of core web development principles (accessibility, performance, and security basics).
  • Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and React (or a similar modern front-end framework), with a willingness to learn.
  • Experience with Java and Spring Boot (or another back-end framework) and an interest in building reliable services.
  • Familiarity with databases and cloud concepts and the ability to learn quickly on the job.
  • Clear communication: able to explain ideas and designs simply, and collaborate effectively with others.
