The Strategy and Executive Services (SES) Division supports Treasury’s leadership, strategic direction, and organisational performance. The Communications and Engagement team plays a central role in connecting our work with our people, our stakeholders, and the public.

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the Role

As a Principal Advisor, Communications, you will act as a trusted business partner to leaders and teams across the Treasury. You’ll provide expert communications advice, embed communication thinking early in projects, and support leaders to engage confidently with internal and external audiences.

In this role, you will

  • partner closely with senior leaders and advisers to deliver strategic and operational communications
  • provide high‑quality advice on complex, sensitive, or fast‑moving issues
  • help prepare leaders for media, stakeholder, and public engagement
  • strengthen internal communications to keep staff informed, engaged, and connected
  • manage channels, issues, and risks related to your portfolio areas
  • contribute to continuous improvement of communication practice across the organisation
  • coach and support colleagues, sharing expertise and building collective capability.

Ō pūmanawa | About You

You’re an experienced communications professional who thrives in complex environments and enjoys working closely with senior leaders. You’re confident, pragmatic, and able to translate complex issues into clear, accessible messages.

You will bring

  • significant experience delivering strategic communications advice
  • excellent writing and editing skills, with a strong plain‑language focus
  • understanding of media, digital channels, and modern communication tools
  • strong judgement, analytical thinking, and problem‑solving skills
  • the ability to build trusted relationships and influence at senior levels
  • a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and inclusive, culturally responsive communication
  • a tertiary qualification in communications or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
