The Southern Charity Hospital Trust was established in 2019 following Blair Vining’s highly publicised battle with terminal bowel cancer. To people throughout Aotearoa, Blair was an extraordinary man: a man who turned his own tragedy into a battle to ensure better cancer care for his community.

One of his greatest legacies has become a reality. Our mission is profound – to ensure that every individual has access to high quality healthcare, regardless of economic status. The Southern Charity Hospital provides free services to those in Southland and Otago, who are unable to access care through the public or private health systems. We are currently providing perioperative care for colonoscopy and dentistry, with the vision to expand our outpatient services in the future.

We are

  • Community-Driven: We are not just a hospital; we are a community of caregivers, working together to uplift the health of our neighbours.
  • Innovation: Our hospital is equipped with the latest technology and practices, ensuring that our healthcare delivery is always at the forefront of progress.
  • Free Healthcare: Join us in our mission to provide free healthcare to those who can't access it through public or private systems, making a tangible difference in people's lives.
