Payroll Advisor - BAU and Project Support

We’re excited to partner with a large central government client of ours, who is seeking an experienced Payroll Advisor to join their payroll function on a 6‑month fixed-term engagement. This role plays a key part in supporting a time-bound payroll compliance and remediation programme based in Wellington. This role sits within the central People Operations function and will play a key role in ensuring former employees are paid accurately, compliantly and on time.
This opportunity offers a great mix of project-based work and business as usual payroll exposure, making it ideal for someone who enjoys working through detail, resolving issues and supporting a high-profile, high-priority piece of work.
About The Role
Initially joining a dedicated payroll compliance project team, you will support former employee registrations and remediation payments, responding to queries and preparing accurate payroll files for processing. As the project progresses, the role transitions into the core payroll team, where you will also support end-to-end payroll processing and quality assurance activity.
Key Responsibilities Include
- Processing former employee registrations and remediation payments
- Extracting, validating and entering payroll and HR data into the payroll system
- Preparing payroll files and supporting payment processing activity
- Responding to payroll-related queries from former employees and internal stakeholders
- Tracking missing information and following up on outstanding registrations
- Supporting end-to-end payroll processing, peer review and data quality checks
- Contributing to regular reporting on remediation progress
About You
This role will suit someone with solid payroll experience who enjoys working in a structured, delivery-focused environment. You will ideally bring:
- Proven experience working in payroll or payroll support roles
- Strong understanding of payroll and HR data and processes
- Confident Excel skills and strong attention to detail
- Clear communication skills and the ability to deal professionally with sensitive queries
- A collaborative approach and the ability to work across project and operational teams
