Community Support Worker — Choices in Community Living

Full Time | 40 hours per week

$23.95 – $29.10 per hour

Mangere East, Auckland

At Spectrum Care, we believe every person deserves a life of dignity, independence, and connection. Our Residential Services support adults with intellectual and/or physical disabilities to live in safe, welcoming homes where they can thrive — not just survive.

As a Community Support Worker, you’ll be part of a dedicated team working directly in these homes. You’ll help people live their best lives by supporting them with everyday tasks, personal goals, and meaningful community engagement. This is a hands-on, heart-led role where no two days are the same — and every moment counts. Full shift availability is required – day, afternoon, night, weekend and sleepover.

What You’ll Be Doing

Your work will be shaped by the needs, interests, and aspirations of each person you support. You’ll provide:

  • Personal care: Assisting with hygiene, dressing, medication, and other daily routines
  • Daily living support: Helping with cooking, cleaning, budgeting, and household tasks
  • Community participation: Supporting people to attend events, join clubs, visit friends, or explore hobbies
  • Social connection: Encouraging friendships, communication, and confidence in social settings
  • Work and education support: Assisting with job readiness, volunteering, or learning opportunities
  • Emotional support: Being a calm, consistent presence during challenging moments
  • Reporting and administration: Keeping accurate records and communicating clearly with families and colleagues

This role requires comfort with personal care across genders, preparing all types of meals (including beef and pork), and supporting individuals in attending church or other faith-based activities.

You’ll work in a structured environment that values teamwork, safety, and respect — but also encourages creativity, fun, and personal growth.

Skills & Experience

We’re looking for someone who brings:

  • Empathy for the challenges of trying to build an ordinary life while living with a disability
  • Energy to keep up with someone who likes to be on the go a lot
  • Ability to remain calm — and calming — in all situations
  • Resilience to help people maintain safe boundaries
  • Good at explaining and negotiating
  • Ability to communicate effectively and supportively with family, colleagues, and the person you support
  • Ability and willingness to provide support and motivation with personal cares and daily living skills
  • Excellent, clear, understandable verbal and written English

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • An interest in attaining a Community Support Worker Level Three or above qualification — we’ll support you to achieve this while you work
  • Experience supporting people with disabilities, and/or mental health issues, and/or behaviours that can be challenging (desirable but not essential)
  • Reliability, commitment, and a genuine passion for working with people
  • Innovation: use creative thinking to support clients in reaching their personal goals and apply fresh approaches to everyday challenges to help clients thrive.
  • A full New Zealand driver’s licence
  • Ability to pass a NZ police check
  • The ability to use a computer effectively, including programs such as Microsoft teams, Word and Outlook

You will be required to attend a 2 week paid induction to prepare you for the role.

Requirements

If you are a non-resident applying for this role you must meet the following INZ Level 3 skill requirements to be considered:

  • Have worked in the care workforce for 3 years or more, and been paid at least the care workforce wage rate during that time, or
  • A relevant qualification on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) — this must be at least a level 4 qualification for a role at skill level 3, or a diploma for a role at skill level 2.

Why This Role Matters

This Isn’t Just a Job — It’s a Chance To Be Part Of Someone’s Journey. You’ll Help People

  • Build routines that give structure and confidence
  • Discover passions and hobbies that spark joy
  • Form relationships that bring connection and belonging
  • Achieve goals that once felt out of reach
  • Live lives that reflect their values, choices, and dreams

You’ll be part of a team that celebrates diversity, encourages growth, and believes in the power of everyday moments to change lives.
