About the Role

This is more than an operations role; it’s a leadership opportunity.

You’ll be responsible for leading a team of approximately 30 staff supported by Supervisors and Team Leaders, ensuring strong leadership at every level while building a culture focused on accountability, engagement, safety, and performance.

You’ll play a critical role in the mobilisation and establishment of a brand-new council sweeping contract,so that the people, systems, and processes are set up for success from day one.

Alongside operational oversight, you’ll build and maintain trusted relationships with Ashburton District Council and other key stakeholders, driving service delivery that consistently meets and exceeds expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop Supervisors and Team Leaders to drive performance
  • Build an engaged, high-performing culture and lead teams successfully through change
  • Establish and operationalise a new council sweeping contract
  • Develop strong, trusted relationships with Ashburton District Council
  • Oversee day-to-day operations including fleet, logistics, and service delivery
  • Manage contract performance, reporting and stakeholder expectations.
  • Drive health & safety, compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Manage operational budgets, efficiencies, and overall performance
  • Handle escalations and ensure high standards of customer service

What We’re Looking For

You will bring:

  • Proven experience leading large operational teams of 30+ staff
  • Strong experience leading leaders, including Supervisors and Team Leaders
  • A genuine people-first leadership style with the ability to engage and inspire others
  • Experience within waste, transport, logistics, or a related service industry
  • Previous experience mobilising or establishing new contracts or operations (highly regarded)
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, ideally within council or contract environments
  • Excellent organisational, problem-solving, and decision-making ability
  • Sound financial and operational acumen
  • Resilience, adaptability, and confidence leading through change
