The Ōtaki to North of Levin (Ō2NL) highway will dramatically improve safety, resilience, and efficiency, while increasing transport choices for a growing population. The project is being delivered in partnership with NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, Muaūpoko Tribal Authority, local hapū of Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga, and Horowhenua District Council.
This is a transformative infrastructure project being delivered using a two-alliance model. Our shared project principles include treading lightly on the whenua, building strong partnerships, and delivering an enduring legacy. We’re looking for great people to join us on this unique journey.
About The Role
We are seeking a Senior Project Engineer with strong leadership and technical expertise to join the McConnell Dowell Whānau on the Ōtaki to North of Levin (Ō2NL) Project.
In this role, you’ll be responsible for overseeing the planning and delivery of key construction activities. You’ll provide technical direction, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, manage risk, and ensure the works are delivered safely, on time and to the highest standards.
You’ll work closely with project leaders, designers, site teams, iwi partners, and other stakeholders to deliver a resilient and culturally aligned transport corridor that leaves a lasting legacy.

About The Role

In this role, you’ll be responsible for overseeing the planning and delivery of key construction activities. You’ll provide technical direction, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, manage risk, and ensure the works are delivered safely, on time and to the highest standards.
You’ll work closely with project leaders, designers, site teams, iwi partners, and other stakeholders to deliver a resilient and culturally aligned transport corridor that leaves a lasting legacy.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the planning, coordination and execution of complex construction works.
- Oversee quality assurance, HSE compliance, and environmental standards on site.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers and site staff, promoting professional development.
- Manage construction methodologies, staging plans, and procurement for key works.
- Coordinate with design, environmental, digital and commercial teams
- Support engagement with iwi, local authorities and community stakeholders.
- Champion continuous improvement, innovation, and best practice on site.
- Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering or similar.
- 5+ years’ experience delivering major civil infrastructure projects.
- Strong leadership, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Proven experience managing teams and subcontractors in a fast-paced environment.
- Working knowledge of NZTA/Waka Kotahi standards and alliance delivery models.
- Strong focus on safety, sustainability, and cultural awareness
- Experience working collaboratively with iwi or local communities is a plus.
