Join Our Crew as an Electrical Technical Officer (ETO)
StraitNZ Bluebridge – Cook Strait Ferries

About Us
At Bluebridge Cook Strait Ferries, we’ve been connecting Aotearoa since 2002 — and we believe the journey should be just as memorable as the destination. Whether it’s freight or families heading across the Strait, we’re proud to deliver warm hospitality and reliable service every day.

As part of the wider StraitNZ group, we’re a growing company with over 450 people nationwide and two New Zealand-registered roll-on/roll-off vessels operating between Wellington and Picton.

Now, we’re looking for a talented Electrical Technical Officer (ETO) to bring their expertise to our team at sea.

About the Role
As an ETO onboard, you’ll be the go-to person for all things electrical. From monitoring switchboards to maintaining complex control systems, you’ll help keep our vessels safe, efficient, and passenger-ready.

This is a hands-on role with plenty of variety — perfect for someone who enjoys problem-solving, teamwork, and the unique lifestyle of working at sea.

What We’re Looking For
We’re after someone who’s qualified, capable, and ready to hit the ground running. Our ideal candidate will have:

A Bahamas-recognised ETO CoC (essential)

Valid STCW safety training

Solid sea-time experience (bonus if it’s on passenger ships)

The right to live and work in New Zealand (essential)

Clear, confident communication in English

A clean criminal record and ability to pass a pre-employment drug test

Please note: Fijian-issued CoCs/MECs are not accepted by our flag state (Bahamas) and unfortunately cannot be considered.

What You’ll Be Doing

Maintaining and repairing electrical and electronic systems

Supporting critical systems like automation, alarms, HVAC, AV, and refrigeration

Managing electrical spares and stores

Troubleshooting faults and providing technical advice

Supporting the vessel’s emergency response as a ship’s officer

Working closely with the Chief Engineer and onboard team to ensure smooth operations

What’s in it for You
We believe a great job deserves great benefits. Here’s what we offer:

Kiwisaver matched up to 8%

Southern Cross health insurance

Staff travel perks for you, your whānau and friends

Annual wellbeing contribution to keep you in ship-shape

Quality PPE and full uniform supplied

A proper work-life balance: 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off — and yes, you’ll live onboard during your swing

Sound Like You?
If you're a qualified ETO looking for a new challenge — or a change of scenery — we’d love to hear from you.

Apply now and come aboard. Let’s make every crossing count.
