This role is all about working independently on the software development life cycle, from research and analysis to design, development, testing, and maintenance. You'll be responsible for delivering high-quality software applications that align with our technology architecture policy and procedures. You'll also have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects, from technology research and analysis to software application support and maintenance.
As a senior software engineer, you'll be working with a range of stakeholders, including internal and external customers, to understand their needs and deliver solutions that meet their expectations. You'll be part of a team that is committed to continuous improvement, and you'll have the opportunity to contribute to the development of new technologies and approaches. Your work will make a real difference to our customers and to the wider community in Aotearoa.

Core Technical Skills
- Minimum of 5 years' hands-on experience in software engineering, ideally within large-scale or enterprise environments
- Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technology discipline
- Strong proficiency in modern object-oriented programming languages, particularly C# and .NET/.NET Core.
- Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and web services using Web API, WCF, and SOAP.
- Solid understanding of integration patterns and technologies (e.g. JSON, XML, asynchronous messaging, service orchestration).
- Competence in software testing principles and practices, including unit testing, integration testing, and automated testing pipelines.
- Practical experience with DevOps tools and practices — Git, GitHub Enterprise, CI/CD pipelines, Azure DevOps, Octopus Deploy.
- Familiarity with API management and security practices, including OAuth2, mTLS, encryption, and OWASP Top 10.
- Experience working with relational databases and writing efficient SQL queries for high-volume systems.
- Sound understanding of SDLC methodologies (Agile, Scrum) and experience in structured software development environments.
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS.
- Experience with containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Familiarity with event streaming or messaging systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
- Experience with API Gateway technologies (e.g. KONG, Azure API Management).
- Observability tools such as Elastic/Kibana, Application Insights, or Grafana.
- Knowledge of infrastructure as code and deployment automation tools (e.g. Terraform, ARM templates).
- Awareness of secure coding practices, static code analysis (e.g. Snyk, Checkmarx).
- You write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code, and care deeply about quality and performance.
- You're comfortable navigating complex integration environments and connecting modern services to legacy systems.
- You enjoy mentoring others, sharing knowledge, and contributing to the team's technical capability.
- You're a proactive problem-solver, always looking for better ways to architect, build, and deploy solutions.
