Transpower's purpose is to empower the energy future for New Zealand - a future that delivers a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable and secure electricity system.
About The Team
Our Operations Process and Technology Improvement (OPTI) group supports the Operations division to deliver solutions required to manage the real time power system and prepare for an increasingly electrified future https://www.transpower.co.nz/system-operator/our-system-operator-role
The group plays an essential role in proactively identifying the critical capabilities, skills, resources, and support needed to meet current and future operational needs. They are working to optimise planning and investment decisions across key tools and processes (including SCADA applications, market systems, and real time asset management technologies) utilised by our control rooms and other areas of Transpower.
The Capability and Capital Planning team creates and maintains a relevant capability model and the assessment of the maturity level for Operations agreed by the Operations Senior Leadership Team (SLT). This team maintains the capability roadmap, a forward looking workplan across Operations, working closely with our ICT division, to have a joined-up investment plan to deliver the long-term business outcomes for the division.
The opportunity - due to lateral progression!
Supporting the Head of Operations, Process and Technology, you'll ensure OPTI facilitates capability and capital planning using a collaborative approach involving the wider Operations Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to ensure our operations division is investing in the right functional and operational capabilities and tools.
You'll lead the capability and capital planning function in Operations by creating and facilitating an adaptive process to incorporate changes in priorities agreed by SLT over the investment period. You'll also oversee the creation of an investment plan with various inputs e.g. capability uplift roadmap, continuous improvement initiatives, funding envelop etc.

You may also engage with Service Providers, Technology Suppliers, market participants and the Electricity Authority.
What will you bring?
Ideally, you'll have experience working in business architecture/enterprise business analysis as you'll work with our Investment Manager and Business Architect to form a roadmap and translate that into the investment plan.
Experience navigating in a regulated business and driving capital planning investments will enable you to hit the ground running and ensure we deliver value. You'll be known for your exceptional stakeholder management and facilitation skills and thrive in a role where you distil complexity and collaborate with and learn from technical subject matter experts.
To be considered, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate:
- A relevant tertiary qualification in a related discipline and/ or equivalent experience.
- Leadership of technical and operationally oriented people providing an internal service. You will have proven ability to understand the theory underlying business requirements and love delivering value and outcomes at pace!
- Excellent communications skills, written and verbal, an ability to present complex information clearly and simply, tailoring communications to meet the audience needs.
- Expertise in planning and facilitating stakeholder workshops driving consensus and tangible outcomes.
