Our Opportunity
Join Mercury's Cloud & Infrastructure Platforms team as a Cloud Operations Engineer (known internally as our Operations Engineer) and play a key role in supporting our critical cloud-based business operations. You'll be providing essential technical expertise that underpins Mercury's core business operations.
Reporting to the Principal Operations Engineer, you'll support Mercury's enterprise-scale AWS and Azure cloud environments, ensuring operational excellence that keeps the lights on for more Kiwis than any other energy provider. This role focuses on maintaining reliable systems at scale, optimising performance across complex enterprise infrastructure, and implementing solutions that support Mercury's vision for tomorrow.
Your expertise will ensure our enterprise cloud platforms deliver strong reliability, meet security standards, and operate effectively while you collaborate with Technology teams across the organisation.

Key Accountabilities
- Manage and maintain the operational health, security, and performance of enterprise-scale AWS and Azure platforms, implementing robust monitoring systems and backup solutions
- Drive cloud cost optimisation initiatives and implement FinOps practices to enhance effectiveness and streamline spending across enterprise environments
- Collaborate with Technology teams, suppliers, and partners to implement, document, and support cloud solutions aligned with Mercury's technical roadmap
- Ensure cloud security compliance through partnership with the Security team and implementation of appropriate controls
- Mentor team members on cloud best practices while ensuring alignment with Technology Compliance, Governance, and Project Management processes
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and automation opportunities across cloud operations
- Tertiary qualification in Technology or equivalent AWS/Azure certifications relevant to cloud engineering
- 3+ years of experience implementing, supporting, and administering AWS and Azure solutions in enterprise environments
- Strong knowledge of cloud architecture, security principles, and infrastructure automation (IaC, CI/CD pipelines) at enterprise scale
- Experience with process management, process mapping, and continuous improvement methodologies applied to enterprise cloud operations
- Background in troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and performance optimisation for enterprise cloud systems
- Ability to work effectively in an Agile environment with strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Knowledge of emerging cloud technologies and industry best practices for enterprise implementations
- Experience with Azure services including App Services, Entra ID, Function Apps, Logic Apps, API Management, and Front Door WAF
- Experience with AWS services including EC2, VPCs, EBS, S3, ECS, Control Tower, IAM, and CloudWatch
- Additional 5 days leave per annum (MyDays)
