Project Manager - HVDC

Transpower New Zealand

Date: 8 hours ago
City: Wellington, Wellington
Contract type: Full time
  • Bring your multidisciplinary project management experience & commercial acumen
  • Lead multiyear projects, critical part of our national infrastructure
  • Secure electricity transfer for future generations

Transpower's purpose is to empower the energy future for New Zealand - a future that delivers a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable and secure electricity system. As owner and operator of the National Grid, Transpower provides the infrastructure and market systems that connects electricity generators to major electricity users and distribution networks that deliver electricity to homes and businesses around the country (we don't own, generate or sell electricity).

Our context

Much of New Zealand's electricity is generated from renewable energy sources (hydro and increasingly wind and solar) that exist in remote areas. Essential to powering our country, the HVDC link connects the grid between the North and South Islands and has an ever-increasing role in balancing intermittent renewable generation between the Islands.

The HVDC Cable Replacement and Capacity Project (HVDC Project) aims to replace the three existing high voltage direct current (HVDC) cables that connect the North Island and South Island power transmission systems with like-for-like cables by 2032 and at the same time install a fourth cable of the same type. In addition to this Transpower also propose to coordinate several other upgrade projects. This is a programme of works that only occurs every 40-50 years

A dedicated project team will support Transpower to achieve our HVDC Programme of projects.

The opportunity

Reporting into the Project Director, you'll play a key Project Management role ensuring we deliver in accordance with scope, safety, time, quality standards, and budget. This will require you to understand, manage and work with the confines of complex commercial contracts. In addition, you will also develop and manage standard contracts for less custom components of the works programme.

You will amplify our emphasis on safety during all activities to ensure our contracted service providers (design and build) have established and robust safety systems in place and maintain a skilled workforce.

As Project Manager you will understand the drivers of cost in defining solutions and constructing our assets and will seek out efficiencies and sustainable cost reductions. This will drive best value from project and construction processes and installing and maintaining assets at most economic whole-of-life cost.

What will you bring?

You'll have clear and concise verbal communication, both written and verbal and an inclusive and collaborative style. Your superpower will be your flexibility to pick up varied work as the role requires and engage and influence key stakeholders, partners, and contractors to drive the desired project outcomes whilst proactively mitigating risk.

To be considered, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate:

  • A formal project management qualification such as PMP or equivalent (e.g. PMBOK)
  • A sustained track record in delivering a broad range of infrastructure projects (our ideal candidate will have multidisciplinary experience e.g. civil, electrical and structural)
  • Working understanding of standard contracts such as NZS 3910 and the ability to understand and manage non-standard contracts
  • Familiarity use databases, project management and scheduling software (e.g. MS Project), and financial management systems at pace
