Asset Planner, Transmission Lines - Wellington

Transpower New Zealand

Date: 2 days ago
City: Wellington, Wellington
Contract type: Full time
Grow your asset management career at the heart of Aotearoa's electricity system.

At Transpower, we plan, build, operate, and maintain the National Grid — a $5B network of critical infrastructure that forms New Zealand's electricity transmission backbone. Our purpose is to enable a sustainable energy future for Aotearoa, supporting a net-zero carbon economy through a reliable, secure electricity system.

About The Team

Transpower's Grid Development division plans 30 years ahead to meet future grid needs, ensuring assets align with current and future generation and growing demand.

The Lines Asset Planning team, based in Wellington and Christchurch, manages key Transmission Lines infrastructure which includes nearly 20,000 circuit kilometres of conductors and earthwire, along with more than 36,000 supporting structures. Their focus is on prioritising timely investments that deliver long-term value while balancing cost and risk.

About The Opportunity

Ideally based in Wellington (although Christchurch may be considered for the right candidate) this role is designed for someone early in their asset management career — whether you've recently entered the electricity sector, gained some experience in asset planning or data analysis, or come from a related background and are looking for a meaningful next step.

You'll work closely with colleagues across Transpower, developing asset management plans, contributing to investment decisions, and learning how we manage critical infrastructure over a 15-year horizon.

Initially, your focus will be on our Insulator and Attachment Point portfolios. You'll use health models, tools, and historical data to forecast asset replacement and refurbishment needs, and support the development of strategic plans that consider risk, cost, and performance.

You'll also have the opportunity to:

  • Contribute to integrated asset management plans across Capex and Opex
  • Review and calibrate asset health models
  • Develop investment cases using whole-of-life costing principles
  • Support and scope strategic investigations to improve portfolio outcomes
  • Provide advice and reporting that inform operational plans and regulatory submissions

What will you bring?

We're looking for someone with strong analytical capability and a genuine interest in infrastructure and asset management. You'll be comfortable working with complex information and able to translate it into insights that support good decisions.

You don't need to be an expert in Transmission Lines - we'll support you to learn.

To be considered, your CV and cover letter should demonstrate:

  • Approximately 1 to 3 years' experience in asset management, gained through working within an asset management team or framework, or equivalent experience and qualifications
  • Understanding of the energy sector and assets relevant to this field
  • Proven ability to analyse and interpret large data sets, with proficiency in tools such as Excel, Power BI, Python, or similar
  • Commercial awareness, including financial analysis and risk management
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills — please include any experience in continuous improvement or developing ways of working that delivered greater business value
  • The ability to communicate clearly with a range of technical and non-technical stakeholders, both verbally and in writing

While not essential, the following will be highly regarded:

  • A tertiary qualification in Engineering, Science, Asset Management, or a related discipline
  • Some project management experience or exposure, including assisting with scoping and coordinating investigations or tasks involving internal teams and external consultants
  • Experience or knowledge of corrosion management

What sets this role apart?

This is a development-focused role in a nationally significant sector. You'll be surrounded by experienced asset planners who enjoy mentoring, and supported by professional networks such as CEATI and the Asset Management Council. The work is meaningful, the culture is welcoming, and there are clear pathways to grow your career.
