The Opportunity

The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment is looking to add to his team of Advisors to enhance his capacity to support, understand and critique current reforms of resource management and other environmental permitting.

If you have been actively involved in either applying for environmental consents or making decisions on them, and you understand the practicalities and tensions inherent in managing environmental resources, then this job may be for you.

Role Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality analysis, advice and research across water, land use and biodiversity, with a particular focus on environmental consenting
  • Prepare and deliver strong, well-reasoned and well-written analysis, commentary
  • Assist with the formulation of recommendations by the Commissioner
  • Source, gather and organise information required for research
  • Provide quality assurance of work undertaken
  • Manage the execution of the project and workstreams from initiation to completion
  • Identify corrective actions to address issues and risks

The organisation:

This is a chance to work for a meaningful organisation who are making a difference to the future of NZ. The Commissioner deals with a broad range of environmental matters. He requires staff with diverse disciplinary backgrounds, including natural, applied or social sciences, engineering, conservation, law or planning.

You will be a key team member working across the organisation of 16 specialist staff and support staff who are passionate about what they do and collaborate effectively.

What You’ll Offer

You will have completed an advanced degree and have at least five years' practical experience behind you. That experience might be in a consultancy, supporting applicants with their RMA consents, Crown Minerals Act permits or DOC concessions. Or you may have been in local or central government assessing and determining decisions on consents.

Your defining attribute is likely to be intellectual curiosity - asking the right question is often more important than providing a ready answer. Your ability to draw on your work experiences to examine and use appropriate frameworks to understand the potential implications of the issue being investigated and to offer pragmatic solutions is important.

Candidates need to be comfortable with delivering analysis and engaging with stakeholders. Outstanding writing and excellent oral communication skills are essential.
