Introduction:

Registered Nurse (Community based)

  • 32 hours per week (0.8FTE)
  • Bethlehem, Te Puna
  • Fixed term - maternity leave cover for 12 months


At Waipuna Hospice, we're passionate about providing specialist palliative care to our communities in Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty. Our goal is to deliver a responsive, compassionate, and person-centred care to individuals living with life-limiting illnesses. Our services are tailored to meet the unique and evolving specialist palliative care needs of each patient, ensuring dignity, comfort, and quality of life throughout their journey.is to ensure that patient with life limiting conditions in both our inpatient unit and community settings.

We help with a wide range of services, including nursing and medical care, counselling, social work, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, companion visits, equipment loans, respite care, carer education - and so much more! Thanks to funding from Te Whatu Ora, along with the incredible mahi of our fundraising team and the support of our charity shops, we’re able to keep these essential services going.

About The Job

Our registered nurses are the face of Waipuna Hospice in our community. We need an experienced registered nurse with community nursing, palliative care and/or oncology experience.

Waipuna Hospice nurses provide specialist palliative care through close collaboration with patients, their families/whānau, interdisciplinary team members, and other health and community services.

Care is tailored to the unique needs of each patient and their family/whānau, encompassing the four dimensions of well-being:

  • Taha tinana - physical health
  • Taha hinengaro - mental and emotional well-being
  • Taha whānau - social connections and support
  • Taha wairua - spiritual health


This holistic approach aims to enhance quality of life by addressing all aspects of a person’s experience.

Skills and Experiences:

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ postgraduate experience
  • Palliative care, oncology experience and/or community nursing experience
  • Be committed to, and experienced in interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Effective organisational and time management skills
  • Values that align with Waipuna Hospice Values
  • Effective collaboration skills (verbal, written, non-verbal) with experience in communication difficult messages with compassion and care
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good level of computer skills and experience in using patient management systems
  • Compassion and an understanding of working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds and all walks of life. You are a respectful and professional person who demonstrates exceptional moral values in everything that you do.
