We have a rare opportunity for a Senior Legal Counsel to join our in-house Legal team. In this role you will provide strategic legal support to customer-focused teams throughout the bank, helping them to deliver good customer outcomes in everything they do.

Reporting to the GM Legal – Customer, you will provide strategic legal support and advice for Kiwibank’s retail and business customer products, including home loans, credit cards, everyday banking, and payments. Your expertise will be key in advising on legislation such as the CCCFA, FMCA, and FTA to ensure compliance and support product development. Additionally, you will play a vital role in advancing the bank’s governance, strategy, and performance while identifying, reporting, and managing legal risks effectively.

At Kiwibank, we will help you build on your strengths and develop new skills, but in the meantime, we would love to hear from you if you have some of the following:

• At least six years PQE, with recent exposure to banking or financial services. Ideally, you have strong knowledge of the CCCFA, FMCA, and other relevant legislation.
• Proven ability to lead banking-related projects, providing strategic legal guidance and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Experience in overseeing legal workstreams and mentoring junior team members, fostering their professional development.
• Strong ability to collaborate with diverse teams, build relationships, and influence key stakeholders to drive business outcomes.
• A proactive approach to learning, with a willingness to take on new challenges and develop expertise in legislation or regulatory changes you are unfamiliar with.
• Ability to align legal advice with Kiwibank’s strategic priorities, delivering practical and commercially sound solutions.
• Ability to provide pragmatic legal advice that carefully balances customer needs with business objectives, ensuring solutions are both commercially viable and legally sound.
• Skilled at tailoring advice to different contexts and effectively prioritising work based on strategic importance and risk appetite.
