We are seeking applications for Senior OIA Advisor positions. In these roles, you'll manage OIA requests, provide expert advice, and collaborate across Government Services teams to support Ministry objectives. Strong communication, organizational skills, and knowledge of government processes are essential. Positions are based in Wellington.

As an OIA Senior Advisor, you will play a crucial role in supporting the Government and Ministry objectives by providing expert advice and technical expertise in managing Official Information Act (OIA) requests. You will be a key member of the OIA Services Team but will also work collaboratively across other Government Services teams, including Ministerial Correspondence, Parliamentary Advice and Coordination, and OIA Advisory and Complaints.

Key Responsibilities

Qualifications and Skills:

  • OIA Management:
    • Oversee and manage a caseload of OIA requests, ensuring timely and accurate responses in compliance with relevant legislation and guidelines.
    • Analyze complex information and provide clear, concise advice and recommendations on OIA matters.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration:
    • Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate the effective processing of OIA requests.
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, fostering a collaborative and cooperative work environment.
  • Advisory and Technical Expertise:
    • Provide technical expertise and advice on OIA-related issues to support the Ministry and Government objectives.
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures to improve OIA processes and practices.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with other Government Services teams, including Ministerial Correspondence, Parliamentary Advice and Coordination, and OIA Advisory and Complaints, to ensure a coordinated approach to information management.
  • Policy and Procedure Development:
    • Assist in the creation and revision of OIA policies and procedures to enhance efficiency and compliance.


  • Proven organizational skills with the ability to plan ahead, use initiative, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines while maintaining high levels of accuracy.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to convey complex information effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and collaborate with staff at all levels.
  • In-depth knowledge of the machinery of government, risk management, and managing at the political interface.

Requirements:

  • Must be based in Wellington, New Zealand.
  • Relevant experience in a similar advisory role within the public sector is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of the Official Information Act and its application in a governmental context.
