The Opportunity

Our Energy & Utilities business is seeking a Telecommunications Service Technician to spend one year at Scott Base in Antarctica. This is a fixed term position, including thorough training in Christchurch before you leave for Antarctica for 12 months. In this role, you will maintain and service all Antarctica NZ Telecommunications systems and equipment, keeping them within operational standards. You will diagnose faults and breakdowns, as well as complete planned maintenance and service tasks, maintaining an appropriate level of communication spares and an up-to-date register of equipment.

As part of the small, close-knit team at Scott Base, you will also be involved in general base tasks. You will be working 6 days per week, 48 hours per week.

Important Skills

  • Broad experience in all aspects of working with Telecommunications: mobile, copper and fibre cable, UHF/VHF.
  • Minimum Level 3 NZQA Telecommunications or equivalent or 3 years similar experience in the industry
  • Ability to use jointing and fault-finding equipment
  • Knowledgeable with reading and interpreting plans
  • Must have unrestricted working rights in New Zealand
  • Adaptability – this isn’t a standard 9-5 role and will require someone who is open to new experiences, and a completely different work environment.

As part of the role, you will have to undertake a full in-depth pre-employment medical, therefore we are seeking candidates who are physically fit and healthy. You will also be required to complete and pass a drug test and Ministry of Justice criminal check prior to starting employment.
