About the Role
We’re looking for an Orthopaedic Surgeon who is proficient in general orthopaedics and trauma for a fixed term appointment of 6 months from 1st January 2026 and are happy to accommodate a job share, with a joint appointment to fulfil the service requirements of the FTE.

About the Team/Service/ Location
Gisborne Hospital is the base hospital for the wide geographical area, Tairāwhiti, extending up the East Cape of New Zealand, creating enormous scope and variety in the work available to an enthusiastic and skilled general surgeon. Providing healthcare to a population of 50,000, Tairāwhiti is well supported locally by comprehensive medical and surgical services and has a full range of diagnostic facilities on site including a new MRI scanner and CT scanner.
The department provides general, acute and elective care with current sub-specialty interests including Hip and Knee Arthroplasty, Paediatrics and Sports Surgery. We are looking for a colleague to join the team with a sub specialist interest that would compliment and help build the department and services offered.
About you
To be part of our team, you will have:
- Registration as a Medical Practitioner with the New Zealand Medical Council of New Zealand or eligible for registration with the Medical Council to enable you to practice medicine within New Zealand.
- Demonstrated clinical expertise in management of a variety of orthopaedic conditions
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop partnerships and work collaboratively within a team
Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth. Experience in projects/initiatives which give effect to Te Tiriti principles and frameworks, and the application of Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.
